Maldives Traditional Dhandi Jehun Dance

Dance to a unique island beat

The Maldivian Islands are a collection of islands on the sapphire waters of the Indian Ocean that are revered for their pristine beaches, vibrant tropical sunsets and mesmerizing local culture. To fully soak in all these fantastic elements, indulge in the range of Maldives luxury resorts dotting each unique island. The Cocoa Island Maldives is an excellent choice of Maldives resort with its sumptuous over-the-water suites laced with warm island hospitality, which will make for an unforgettable stay. For a welcome dose of the local culture, head over to the capital isle/city of Male, for a front-row seat to some of the country’s most iconic performance arts. The Maldives boasts of several cultural dances which can trace its influences to India, Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Sri Lanka, to name a few cultural culprits. Of particular note is the Dhandi Jehun Folk Dance, and it is a unique performance art as the interpretation and presentation varies from island to island. A Dhandi Jehun in Male would not be the same on one of the other islands. The dance is performed by an impressive coterie of 30 men, and many believe that this particular dance can be traced back to the Minicoy Islands located off the coast of India, near Kerala. A lead singer starts the performance, who sings the “Unbaa” or “Thaara” songs, while the other members of the troupe keep the beat and supply the chorus. The dance features sticks called “Dhandi”, which each performer holds and rhythmically beats against those of his neighbour for a high rousing and melodically engaging performance each time. Although the dance has no set costume, the dancers all dress uniformly for harmony during this unique cultural event.
