The Esplanade or better known as Theaters on the bay is a fairly large performing arts center located in Marina Bay. The center sits majestically by the mouth of the Singapore River.It takes its name after the Esplanade park that’s located in the close proximity. Singapore has been a key tourist destination. Simultaneously the hospitality industry in too has been fast expanding and diversifying. Most tourist have moved away from the standard hotels and are now considering serviced apartments. The construction of the center began in 1996 even though the initial idea was put forward in 1989. The construction work of the center was completed in February 2001 but the was officially opened in 2002 October by the then president of Singapore. The Esplanade has a concert hall with a seating capacity of around 1600 and a theater with a capacity of 2000.
The design of the building was born as a conjunction of two architectural firms. The roof of the building is designed with great care and some say it takes the shape of a durian , a famous tropical fruit or the eye of a fly.
The center has many facilities such as the performance venues that are matched with world class standards. The Esplanade also contains meeting venues as well as offers many lifestyle and arts related services.
Known to be one of the world’s busiest arts centers the Esplanade hosts a wide range of programs. The center’s in house team organizes various festivals and concerts for guests at various times of the year.
