Thaipusam Festival

A prayer to the mighty ones

Falling on the months of January or February the Hindu Thaipusam Festival also referred to as the Thaipongal festival, is celebrated even in countries with a small Hindu community, such as Malaysia, Mauritus, Singapore and Myanmar. Thaipusam is the combination of the Name of the month ‘Thai ‘and the star Pusam that is at the highest point during the festival.

Although different regions celebrate the festival differently, there are some unique features of the festival. The ‘Kavadi Attam’ is a dance the devotees perform during the ceremonial worshiping of Sri Murugan, The Hindu god of war. It symbolizes a physical sacrifice to gain help from Lord Murugan.

In Singapore the festivities take a slightly different but almost similar turn to the ones in Tamil Nadu India. A procession starting from Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple in the early morning , with devotees carrying milk pots and offering Kavadis in return for their vows, and sometimes spikes on the body walk four kilometers, and comes to a halt at the Sri Thendayuthapani temple.

Where ever it is celebrated, The Thaipusam is a colourful festival that is surely worth being a part of. Try a bit of this devotional dance, and be marvelled by the sacrifices made to the mighty Hindu Gods, while you experience Singapore and the harmony of the many ethnicities. Serviced apartments Singapore offer a very convenient and cost effective way to experience this amazing country.
