As April approaches, Thailand gears up for one of its most exciting celebrations – The Songkran Festival. What better place to immerse yourself in the festivities than in the sun-kissed paradise of Phuket? Here’s a glimpse into the excitement and traditions of Songkran:

What is the Songkran Festival all about?

Songkran marks the Thai New Year and is celebrated with great fervour across the country. It’s a time for renewal, cleansing, and paying respects to elders and ancestors. Songkran is renowned for its water fights, symbolic of washing away the past year’s misfortunes and welcoming the new year with a fresh start.

What Happens During Songkran

During Songkran, the streets of Phuket come alive with joyful chaos as locals and visitors alike engage in friendly water battles. Water guns, buckets, and even elephants are employed to drench passersby in a playful display of merriment. Traditional rituals, such as the pouring of scented water over Buddha statues and the hands of elders, add a spiritual dimension to the festivities. Participating in one of these festivals is known to be one of the best things to do in Phuket at this time of the year.

In addition to water, brightly coloured powder, known as “scented talcum powder,” is often used during Songkran to smear on faces and clothing, adding to the festive atmosphere. These bright colours symbolize the joy and vitality of the new year.

Are the Songkran Celebrations Suitable for Kids on This Tour

While Songkran celebrations in Phuket are predominantly lively and energetic, they are also family-friendly, with many activities geared toward children. Families can enjoy water fights together, participate in traditional ceremonies, and savour delicious Thai delicacies at street stalls and local restaurants. Consider staying at a family resort like SAii Laguna Phuket while enjoying all the fun.
