Globe Theatre London

A Shakespearean Experience

Built in the year 1599 by Lord Chamberlain’s men on the south bank of the River Thames, the original Globe Theatre was destroyed by a fire in the year 1613. It was later rebuilt on the same site in the year 1614 and was altogether demolished in the year 1644. The Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre you see today is a structure built on academic approximation of the old one, based on the available evidence.

Founded by Sam Wanamaker and built about 750ft from the original site, this venue was opened to the public in 1997 by Queen Elizabeth II with a production of Henry V. Anyone who visits the site will also have the opportunity to familiarize oneself with the Blackfrair’s Theatre, which is due to be completed by November 2013 as the Sam Wanamaker Theatre.

At the Globe Theatre you are given the opportunity to experience Shakespearean and many other novel productions whilst educating oneself about Shakespeare’s London. With the capacity for seating 1,500 people, the theatre drew 210,000 patrons in its initial 1997 season. You could also take part in the world’s largest exhibition on Shakespeare.

This building speaks much of a bygone era, the emergence of theatregoers and most of all how the greatest playwright of our times wrote and directed an immense number of plays. Shakespeare and his Globe Theatre was famous for combining the normal abstract aspects of day to day life with the supernatural while also speaking to the minds of the people and relating to universal feelings across cultures and generations. A trip to this historical place is a must if you happen to visit London.
