Exploring Kalutara: Must-Visit Attractions and Hidden Gems

Just a short drive south of Colombo, Kalutara is one of those places that has a little bit of everything — and yet somehow still flies under the radar. Nestled where the Kalu Ganga river meets the Indian Ocean, this charming coastal town has been drawing travellers for centuries.

The Kalutara Bodhiya

Even if you’re not particularly religious, Kalutara Bodhiya has a way of stopping you in your tracks. This Buddhist temple is home to a sacred Bodhi tree believed to have been grown from a cutting of the very tree in India under which the Buddha achieved enlightenment. Your local accommodations, such as The Blue Water Hotel and Spa, are relatively close to this for a quick visit as well.

The Richmond Castle

If you’ve got even a passing interest in history, Richmond Castle is an absolute must. This colonial-era mansion was built in the late 19th century and is a fascinating example of British architecture in Sri Lanka, blending Gothic and Indian styles across four floors that include a ballroom, billiards room, and library.

The Brief Garden

Designed by Bevis Bawa — brother of the legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa — the garden is a living masterpiece, blending tropical foliage, vibrant flowers, serene water features, hidden pathways, whimsical sculptures, and intriguing architectural elements throughout.

The Kalu Ganga

For something a little different out of the places to visit in Kalutara, swap the beach for the river and hop aboard a boat on the Kalu Ganga. Cruising along this scenic river takes you past lush greenery, charming villages, swaying palm trees, colourful birds, and local fishermen going about their day.
