Baandiya Jehun Dance: Soak in the Local ambience

For any individual who is aware of the existence of the cluster of islands in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the mere mention of Maldives brings to mind powdery white beaches bordered by cerulean waters as they are warmed by the golden rays of the sun. For others, especially for the locals of the islands, Maldives is not only their homeland but it is also where their diverse cultural and religious practices converge to create a truly ‘Maldivian’ self.

When it comes to the culture of the islands, it is varied and diverse in its content but in essence, it is truly unique. For instance, Boduberu music is an intrinsic component of the Maldivian culture. The music is a quick paced rhythm that begins slowly but develops into a rising crescendo within minutes. This music is greatly enjoyed by all those in the vicinity and this enjoyment is highly infectious as well! Just as boduberu music is believed to have originated from Africa, the Baandiya Jehun dance is believed to be similar to an Indian dance.

The Baandiya Jehun Dance is yet another unique form of entertainment that is thoroughly enjoyed by the tourists as well as the locals. This dance involves the carrying of metallic water pots by young women as they keep the rhythm and the beat by beating the pots with their fingers which are usually adorned with rings to ensure that sufficient sound is made when dancing. What makes this form of dance unique is the mere fact that it is only performed by young females. While there is no set costume that is worn during the performance, most opt for a local dress by the name of Dhigu Hedhun which is simply a long skirt and a top.

Therefore, when residing at a Maldives resort, keep in mind the rich cultural core that is intrinsic in all Maldivians and if possible, choose to participate in these dances and experience the local culture personally for such an encounter is sure to enhance the quality of your holiday by the sea. Further augment the value of your vacation by opting to stay at a Maldives luxury hotel with private access to exceptional reefs that is sure to make your diving expeditions memorable. If this is what you seek, one should look no further than Cocoa Island Maldives whose lagoon allows you to dive in private and view the underwater world in a whole new light.
