Art & Sculpture Sri Lanka
Historical Art & Sculpture Sri Lanka

The history of Sri Lanka can be traced back further than the arrival of Vijaya from India. In fact, many folk tales detail the manner in which Vijaya is said to have met Kuveni, an Island native, and later his wife. These tales are often considered to be the commencement of Sri Lankan history. While Prince Vijaya is believed to be the first recorded King of the island from 543 to 505 B.C, the history of art and sculpture is believed to have commenced from around the 3rd century B.C. While the Mahavamsa makes several references to Sri Lanka arts, it has been observed that the arts and sculptures found in Sri Lanka were heavily influenced by Buddhist and Indian traditions as well. In modern times, a number of organisations are increasingly pledging their support to ensure the continuance and preservation of these Sri Lankan artistic traditions and the Sri Lankan Art Gallery marks one such endeavour by the John Keels Group which sponsors the gallery.

Sri Lankan art has withstood the test of time but has also evolved with the island’s social and political climates. For instance, with the colonisation movement that emanated from Europe in the 17th century and the subsequent colonisation of Sri Lanka by three colonial powers, an evolution in art was also witnessed with numerous artists seeking to depict the social atmosphere of the time by capturing iconic moments on canvas.

In the 21st century, artistic inclinations appear to have moved away from colonialist practices and are even considered to be post-colonialist and post-traditionalist by some, but artists concede the existence of certain traditions that underpin and underscore modern art as well.

Art and sculpture in Sri Lanka is thus, clearly seen to have undergone change and has evolved, transformed even, into a style that is difficult to describe. Nevertheless, modern art continues to convey emotion, challenge tradition and norms and present an alternate interpretation and these messages and its communicative ability lies greatly in the skilful hands of the artist.
