What once stood in this area in Hong Kong is the stuff of legend, mystery, and grit. Today, it’s a peaceful park, but suffice it to say that its story is anything but ordinary!
What Was the Kowloon Walled City?
Originally a Chinese military outpost, Kowloon Walled City evolved into something entirely unexpected. At its peak, around 50,000 people lived here, all crammed into a tiny area, which made it the most densely populated place on Earth! It featured layers of stacked buildings, dark alleys, and life buzzing in every square inch, kind of like a vertical village. Tip: do an image search on Google to get a better idea.
Don’t Judge a Book By its Cover
Locals called it the ‘City of Darkness’ or ‘Hak Nam’, and with its tangle of pipes, dripping corridors, and dim, maze-like alleys, it lived up to the name. While often linked to crime, there was another side to this concrete jungle. Amidst the chaos were families raising kids, dentists at work, noodle makers, and schools, all part of a tight-knit community.
Transformation to a Park
In the late ‘80s, the city’s fate changed. Demolished by 1994, it gave way to Kowloon Walled City Park, a lush, tranquil green space that is within easy reach of hotels like Dorsett Wanchai. But don’t worry, you can still get an idea of the area’s history. While staying at a Wan Chai-based 4-star hotel in Hong Kong, you can visit the park to see relics from the original site, and the ‘City of A Thousand Faces’ exhibition, which offers more insights.
A More Immersive Experience
In May 2025, a new addition was made to the park with the opening of a special exhibit, ‘Kowloon Walled City: A Cinematic Journey’, which will run for three years. Built using sets from the 2024 film ‘Twilight of the Warriors’, it lets you feel the buzz of life inside those walls. From recreated rooms and narrow alleyways to projections featuring roaring plane flyovers, it’s the next best thing to time travel!
