A First-Timer’s Guide to Exploring Bophut and Northern Koh Samui

Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village

Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village is the heart of the north coast. Its old wooden shophouses now house cafes, boutique restaurants, and galleries, creating a relaxed, upscale atmosphere. Travellers staying at properties such as Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort can enjoy this unhurried rhythm of island life. The weekly night market offers a budget-friendly way to sample local street food, from Pad Thai to grilled seafood.

Temples and Koh Samui Attractions

Several of the most photographed Koh Samui attractions are within easy reach of the north coast. Wat Phra Yai, also known as the Big Buddha, features a 12-metre golden statue on an island connected by a causeway. Visitors are advised to dress modestly and arrive in the morning before the tour buses. Nearby, Wat Plai Laem has a multi-armed Guanyin statue overlooking a lake, making the two temples easy to visit in one morning.

Maenam’s Quiet Shores

Maenam is one of the quieter main beach areas, with a long, gentle shoreline and fewer crowds than Chaweng. Couples and visitors seeking a slower pace can enjoy its peaceful atmosphere. The area is also known for hillside properties offering sweeping ocean views. Bangrak Pier and the road leading towards the Big Buddha provide convenient access to the north coast’s main sights.

Getting There and Getting Around

Samui Airport is approximately 20 minutes from Fisherman’s Village, while direct flights from Bangkok take around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Songthaews, the island’s shared pickup taxis, typically cost between 40 and 100 baht per person, although fares should be confirmed before boarding. Standard taxis rarely use meters, so negotiating the fare in advance or booking through Grab is advisable. Hotel transfers also offer a comfortable option for arrivals and departures.
