Sigiriya is a place where ancient engineering, wildlife, and lush forest combine to offer a deeply rewarding experience. Whether you’re passionate about history, nature, or seeking peaceful moments, the region has something for every traveller. Here are a few activities to try if you decide to visit.

Bird Watching
The forests surrounding Sigiriya serve as excellent habitat for both endemic and migratory birds. Early morning bird watching walks will often yield species like the Indian Pitta, Painted Stork, Sri Lanka Junglefowl, and Asian Paradise Flycatcher, among others. With dense canopy, vast reservoirs, and a forest reserve around the fortress, it’s a favourite for those who love spotting wildlife and listening to vibrant dawn choruses.

Wildlife Safari
Beyond avian sightings, Sigiriya offers safari-style excursions into nearby parks where elephants, deer, monkeys, and other wildlife roam. In the dry season, the water bodies near the fortress and adjacent reserves attract animals for drinking and bathing, offering photogenic and memorable wildlife experiences. Hotels like Water Garden Sigiriya offer guided tours to help you navigate trails, spot animals safely, and deepen your appreciation for Sri Lanka’s flora and fauna.

Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress is almost a rite of passage and is one of the top things to do in Sigiriya. Rising 200 meters above the jungle, the ancient palace-fortress features frescoes, water gardens, terraced gardens, and a mirror wall. The climb involves stairs under shade and open sky; once at the top, panoramic views over paddy fields, forests, and distant hills make the effort well worth it. Be sure to go early to avoid heat and crowds.

Day Trip to Ritigala Monastery
About a 40 to 50-kilometre drive from Sigiriya, the Ritigala Forest Monastery is a hidden gem enveloped in mist-tucked forest. Once a Buddhist hermitage, its ruins, stone platforms, ancient ponds, and moss-covered walkways feel mystical and calm. It’s ideal as a day trip for those who want to combine spiritual history with cooler forest treks away from the more visited sites.
