Occupying the central hills of Sri Lanka, Kandy is a cultural epicentre tucked away in the misty mountains. Home to some of the island’s top heritage sites and tea estates, here’s how to make the most of a 3-day holiday in the sacred city.

Day One

After checking into your suite at Kings Pavilion Kandy or any similar Kandy luxury hotel, travellers should make their way to the Temple of the Tooth. A boat ride around the Kandy Lake can also acquaint visitors with the rhythm of the city, while paying homage to the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue is another must before sundown.

Day Two

Dedicate the second day to discovering Kandy’s tea heritage. Start with a tour of the Ceylon Tea Museum before heading to a Kandy tea estate for a guided tour. Keeping to the tea theme, enjoy a high-tea spread at a bakery or hotel in Kandy city during the afternoon.

Day Three

Devote your last day in Kandy to discovering its natural wonders. A hike around the Udawattekele Sanctuary can precede a trek up to the Moon Plains. An afternoon picnic at the Royal Botanical Gardens can wrap up your trip to Kandy in the best way imaginable.

Other Tips

The December to March period is the best time to visit Kandy. Local tour operators will also prove indispensable to short-stay visitors covering Kandy’s key attractions.
