The Male Atolls Revealed

The Malé Atolls in the Maldives are a dream spot for both surfers and holidaymakers. Seasoned surfers come here for the top-notch breaks, while intermediate riders will have a blast on long, peeling rights and lefts. Up north, check out Chicken’s, Cokes, and Lohis, and down south, Kandooma Right and Foxeys deliver some of the best waves.

Surfing in the South

With so many quality breaks packed into a small area, the best way to explore the southern Maldives is by boat charter. Surfing in the Maldives usually begins here – Beacons is the standout, offering powerful, flawless waves with an Indonesian-style vibe. For a more relaxed ride, waves like Five Islands, Blue Bowls, and Love Charms are perfect for intermediate surfers.

The Central Surf Spots

The Central Atolls might fly under the radar compared to North and South Malé, but surfers are starting to flock here to escape the northern crowds. While the waves aren’t as big as in the Malé Atolls, you’ll still find consistent surf and flawless barrels. Meemu, Thaa, Dhaalu, and Laamu Atolls, about 140 km south of Malé, are dotted with medium-sized reef breaks, and it provides easy access to accommodations of the likes of Anantara Veli Maldives Resort.

Knowing the North

The Maldives are generally known for being a tropical paradise made up of beautiful, palm tree-covered islands, ringed by white sand beaches, blue lagoons, and spectacular coral reefs inhabited by colourful sea life. The Northern Atolls are no different, and with Baa Atoll being a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is even more special.
