Khon Kaen’s Wat Nong Wang is certainly a sight to behold, but much of the city’s charm lies in its quiet corners, where plenty of hidden treasures reveal much about its heritage and rural rhythms. Here are some of the lesser-known gems in Khon Kaen that are worth visiting.

Colombo Craft Village

Located near top hotels like Avani Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Centre, this community hub is where you’ll find local artisans keeping the city’s heritage alive. You can participate in pottery workshops, browse handmade stationery or simply sip on a cup of coffee in a lush garden.

Wat Thung Setthi

Khon Kaen has plenty of iconic temples to visit, but this one often gets left out. Unlike the city’s traditional temples, this one bridges the gap between tradition and modmost notably through stained glass windows and murals that incorporate pop culture references!

The Caves of Phu Pha Man

It’s a little further away, but the serene natural landscapes at Phu Pha Man National Park make visiting here one of the more rewarding things to do in Khon Kaen. Two highlights worth visiting here are the ‘Bat Cave’ and the Tham Phraya Nakharat cave.

The King Cobra Village

This fascinating spot puts on a rare display of how humans and king cobras can peacefully co-exist. Traditional snake handling shows and demonstrations of the local history of herbal medicine and conservation showcase rare traditions that aren’t found anywhere else in Thailand.
