Colombo isn’t all traffic and tall buildings—there’s a surprisingly peaceful side to the city too. Scattered throughout are green spaces where locals go to walk, relax, catch up with friends, or simply take a break from the daily hustle. These parks and gardens bring a refreshing balance to urban life, offering pockets of nature!
The Galle Face Green
Galle Face Green is a favourite public spot among Colombo locals. Set along the ocean and not far from Colombo Fort, it’s also a place with historical significance. This spot is centre to iconic architecture, and the area has seen a wave of modern development in recent years.
Viharamahadevi/Victoria Park
Viharamahadevi Park, once known as Victoria Park, is the biggest green space in the heart of Colombo. It’s an easy place to lose track of time—whether you’re out for a walk, having a picnic, or just lounging under the trees. The park is especially family-friendly, with a fun playground area that includes a mini castle, swings, slides, and a water fountain that sprays at intervals! Consider stopping by here if you’re staying at a place like the Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams!
Diyatha Uyana/Water’s Edge
Diyatha Uthana is a laid-back urban park by the edge of Diyawanna Lake. It’s got walking paths, a kids’ playground, an aquarium, and a few food stalls for light snacks. Every now and then, there’s also a good market selling souvenirs, clothing, and other little finds that make it a worthwhile addition to the districts of Colombo – things to do here are plenty.
Independence Square
Independence Square is a spacious public area surrounding the Independence Memorial in Cinnamon Gardens. It features green lawns, walking paths, a dedicated bike track, and plenty of space for sports and fitness activities. At its centre is a memorial building and museum that pays tribute to Sri Lanka’s independence.
