Kabuki Theatre

continuing Japanese tradition

The novel Kabuki Theatre was a structure made of wood back in the 1889. It is now a major attraction among locals and foreigners who love to enjoy the traditional kabuki performance. After this great stadium was built caught on fire and faced a great destruction in 1921. The second kabuki theatre or commonly known as Kabuki-za was fire proof along with the customary Japanese architecture and western building supplies and lighting apparatus.

It was a structure which was brought to the public with the hard work of Fukuchi Gen’ichiro a journalist who lived during the Meiji era. He was a popular writer of Kabuki dramas which featured many old and adored actors which Ichikawa Danjuro IX was one of them. After the death of this actor Fukuchi retired from the work of the theatre and was taken under the management of Shochiku Corporation in the year 1914 and run without any flaws until now. In 2010 the Kabuki-za was demolished to reconstruct it in a grand and much standardized manner. And it was estimated to take three years for the completion of the theatre. The reason for its restoration is to make the building strong and to be able to with hold earthquakes and other issues. Before closing it down for renovation many farewell performances were held for the Kabuki lovers from January to April of 2010. Until the reopening in 2013 the performances are scheduled at the Shinbashi Enbujo and other places as well. The special acts performed at the Kabuki theatre are exclusive creations of Shochiku.

There are acts daily showed at the theatres and visited by a huge number of spectators. Each month comprises of a different program for afternoon and evening which is brought to a change in after 3 or 4 weeks of performing.
