Arab Street

The Arabian Quarter in Singapore

Singapore, the Southeast Asian city state with a thriving economy, is one of the top tourist destinations. Singapore attracts thousands of tourists each year owing to its exciting tourist attractions, bustling shopping malls and commercial districts, unique leisure and recreational parks and attractions, and its iconic cityscape. Some of its top attractions include Marina Bay Sands, Little India, Esplande Performing Arts Centre, Sentosa, the Singapore Flyer, and Chinatown. A great luxury hotel in Singapore to accommodate yourself is the St. Regis Singapore.

A vibrant and cultural quarter of Singapore is Arab Street. Much like Little India and Chinatown, Arab Street gets its name from the fact that is predominantly of an Arabian culture. Arab Street has been in existence since Singapore’s founding by Sir Stamford Raffles, whose records indicate the presence of Arabian merchants, and a thriving market place, in the area where Arab Street stands today. Its vibrant colors, unique culture, and intriguing shops make Arab Street a must-visit location in Singapore.

Arab Street stands as a stark contrast to the urbanized sectors of Singapore. Where the urban areas are full of sophisticated and stylish buildings and people in suits, at Arab Street you will find a host of smaller shops which sell a host of traditional Arabian items which are known for their vibrant colors. As it was in the older days, Arab Street is a thriving market place today as well. The shops along the street are known for their colorful fabrics, various oriental and Arabian carpets, perfumes, footwear, and rattan products. There is that sense of a typical market with a culture of bargaining and getting a good deal, which many tourists enjoy. Arab Street is also a great place to indulge in Middle Eastern and Asian cuisine. With authentic Indian, Middle Eastern and Malay restaurants all over Arab Street, you can be assured to getting a taste of rich flavors of these exotic cuisines.
